Maybe they found out their collection process was flawed, and they'd rather not let people misconstrue their numbers. There are lots of reasons to invalidate a data set, and why keep garbage?

Partial quotes. Unless they publish fraudulent papers based on forged data (and you can demonstrate this is what happened), the emails are worth as much as any source of gossip - nothing.
