I actually think it'd be more gay to like someone of the same sex sexually than just liking them emotionally with no physical lust. The personality is a personality, and pretty much genderless. Some personalities are more prominent one gender than the other, but all in all it's generally faceless.
You can fall for someone online not knowing they're actually the same gender as you, but be completely against ever being with them when you find out, even if you still hold some feelings. But if you can lust for someone of the same gender passing by you on the street without knowing them, I'd say that's pretty gay.
