What are your personal thoughts on polygyny or polyandry?

No, your post is irrelevant.
Instects are way tooooo different from humans, socially. Sociobiology already tried to explain social aspects of human life by comparing to ants and it failed.
TaliaNCo's answer wasn't... great either but at least it was right.
If you're going to compare humans to animals try with chimpanzees, or something that's similar to us.

As for the guys who quoted me:

Kalovale Wrote:Uh, I don't really speak for them, but I'm pretty damned sure African kids are the same as any other kids in the world, they don't want to share their toys. Staying true to instincts (in such cases you proposed) seems to promote POSSESSIVENESS (see a lion sharing its prey with a wolf ever?) over actually being okay with it.
Sure, who cares, it's good for the survival of the race, but the emotional distress is exactly what makes it unacceptable.

If polygamy is a social accepted aspect of life there should be no emotional distress. Besides in big families, older kids learn to take care of the younger almost like an adult would. I was just reading about it today, so I'll get some quotes later. One of them was "Kids learn to share toys rather early".

Swaqqin Wrote:African beliefs and traditions are different from ours. They way you used African's as an example makes it seem like that t;she route they resorted to populate. I think it's rather selfish of people who believe in this. Especially I feel bad for the kids. Have you ever seen "John and kate plus 8".How hard it is to deal with 8 kids plan one on one parent trips for the kids. Now it would be extremely harder if John had 3 other wives and 10 other kids. I didn't reply to this thread out of religious beliefs, if your deeply in love with someone there no way in hell you would be ok with them having sex and raising a family with someone other than you.

Yeah, they're different. My point is our belief that polygamy is wrong/unnatural/nasty has weak arguments and can be proved wrong. Tribes that practice polygamy do it because it's useful, not because of what they believe. My example clearly said "Some tribes", and yeah that's the route SOME TRIBES resorted to populate.
Polygamy and big families are not made for us but only because of our lifestyles. If we say "We won't allow it because our lifestyles wouldn't let us take good care of kids" instead of saying "it's wrong/unnatural/nasty", I would totally agree with it.
Not out of religious beliefs, but I'm sure you learned from TV, friends, family, school, whoever. I mean that it was probably taught by society. Western sociaties= strongly based on catholic beliefs. So, eventhough, you don't think your opinions are based on religious beliefs I'm sure that to some points they actually are. I might be wrong, maybe you thaught of it on your own but I don't think that's probable.

To summarize: I'm not saying we should be ok with it. I'm not saying we shouldn't be ok with it either. What I don't like is that we're using wrong arguments to forbid things.

Bleh, yoou guys posted a lot while I wrote all that.
Harrison: you can't compare most animals to humans. Animals behavior is related to biology alone, while our behavior isn't related to it. For some it's related to some extent, while to some others, like Freud, our behavior isn't related at all to biology. Yeah, we're animals too, but we've evolved a lot and we are really different compared to almost every other animal. Humans behavior, specially social behavior can't be compared to animals. Well, you could and you'd probably find some similarities with chimpanzees or whatever animal, but those conducts aren't as complex as ours.
