A mediocre laptop would probably be about 600$

Recession + loaning thousands of dollars to out of work family that I'll probably never get back due to the nature of Capitalism being cost cutting via slashing jobs = Me getting the computer I can afford, not the computer I want. Unless you're willing to bum me the $350, $600 is just too rich for my wallet. A guy's gotta eat and pay rent, you know.
