The reason why Maple's earlier days were "more fun", was because people back then did not focus on who was the strongest, who had the better equips, who could level the fastest. It seems like people on the main Maple forums are the ones who complain and angst about the game not being fun anymore, but you see people in-game enjoying themselves.
Stop worrying about if your character is the strongest, and go have fun just PLAYING!
