I think you missed the part that the pistol will also serve as self-defense. I'm living by myself in a place that I'm fairly unfamiliar with. I moved down here 5 weeks ago for a co-op, so I'm still fairly new. The location is a little bit out in the country and it is awesome to live in, but you never know what will happen.
In regards to "having fun", I'm just going to be shooting metal targets set up in a large field or go down the the firing range. I don't see a problem with that. As long as you practice gun safety, there shouldn't be a problem. Besides, what good is a firing range if you can't use it?
