The shorter time in the ultimate is really noticeable, same for the trade of AP for Spell Vamp. Also, he's as squishy as it gets, I would always get focused and killed in 2 hits, maybe my item build wasn't right but it's a very simillar build to what I use on Heim, who is also squishy (Tear > shoes > Arc. Staff) but I rarely die with Heim. Anyway, if I play it again, I would start with a catalyst into RoA, then tear and then a banshee's...
It seems like the best route so far to go with ryze is this.
Mana crystal->tear asap
boots->mpen boots
Haunting guise
Rod of Ages
Lichbane
Running 9/0/21 masteries and going for mpen reds/mana regen per level yellows/cooldown blues/ and hp quints.
of course things are situational and I might try doing a soulstealer in there too sometime.
