Fitting MLP into a given genre is not that easy. Its storytelling is at its base roots rooted in 1980s deus ex machina plot line delivery whereby a dilemma is presented in the beginning of the episode, the character struggle taking up the body of the show, and finally a contrived solution (we always had extra tickets, of course you listen to the last person who has been a burden for the entire show) with moral consequence. Shows of similar nature are: The Berenstain Bears, Arthur, and Clifford.
If this is all MLP had to offer, then it would just be as unpopular as it was in the past with its contrived and repetitive messages. However, this is not the case as the storyline takes a backseat to vivid characterization that has come to be the norm of most Cartoon Network series cartoons: Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, Dextor's Laboratory, Grim and Evil, and Pinky and the Brain.

Not a Cartoon Network Series
The series is written and animated well, but its the subject matter that people have a hard time getting past. TBH I'd rather see this kind of writing applied to a more "gender equal show" because this seems almost a waste.
It's like if (insert favorite video game designer) wrote a sequel to (insert most hated video game). Might be good, might even get a hell of a lot of rewards, but all in all they could have made something a hell of a lot better and I think that's why a lot of people are pissed.
