Maple + Freezing = no bueno....

You could try doing the same with Gameguard. It seems the only issue I've ever experienced is with Gameguard (relative to win7). Another thing that might work is turning off User Account Control (the popup that asks if you want to allow a program to run), but it leads to more security vulnerabilities. If you have a virus scanner/firewall, and you are 100% confident your computer is safe and that you practice safe computer techniques, then try turning off UAC. Here's a guide

When was the computer purchased and when was the last time you formated? Your computer might also need a good cleaning (physical, and soft). Try things like CC Cleaner, and Spybot/Adaware.

Even though it runs in the background, try a disk cleanup and a defrag (Accessories -> System Tools -> Disc Cleanup/Defragment). Run the cleanup before the defrag.

If you're comfortable looking inside your computer, unplug it, and pop the side off. Look for any built up dust. If it is sitting on something, you can remove it with your fingers, but try not to touch anything inside. If anything has dust clogged in it that you need to get out, go to any local computer/office supply store, and get a can of compressed air. I clean my computer out with compressed air every 2 weeks and I've yet to run into problems. It is recommended by the people I go to for parts to be done atleast once every month. The dust would cause your computer to overheat, and would explain the freezing issue, as your processor/other insides need to cool down before they'll function properly again, which would lead to requiring a few restarts before it works again.

Here's some handy tips on how to clean your computer. I sent that link to my mother a while ago and she was able to do it. If my mother can clean her computer without destroying it, you definately can.
