You can also try, as Jamie said, the power settings. Does the whole screen go black or just the maplestory window itself?
When you're in windowed mode, is it just the windowed maplestory and you can still see taskbar/everything else?
It might be an issue of overheating, but typically that leads to an entire system shutdown, not just a black screen... How do you ventilate your computer while running Maplestory?
Most laptops aren't designed for gaming, so the processing power required to run most games will put a decent sized strain on it.
