I don't know about anyone else here, but making someone else smile or knowing you made some sort of a positive difference in their day, does make me feel good.I ran a simulated scenario in my head where I did something because karma and my conscience forced me to.
Result: I would feel good having made a positive, but at the same time I would look back inwards and half disgust myself for being pretentious. I would end the event by shrugging it off with a "oh well, all's good if it's just me getting tainted morally in trade for an added plus to the day's record of good and evil."
The thing is, though, that I rarely feel or let myself be compelled by conscience. If I feel impulsive to offer help, I would gladly. Else, I would rather forget having helped than having people thank me.
