I will have to rebute those bolded statements you made.
I'm a Rammus veteran. I use him almost regularly. You can argue that my point is a special case since he's a ****ing tank, and he can take much more damage than other champs early on. But its not; boots will not cut it. Doran's items get you the most bang for your buck. Really.
I've been there. I used to get boots every time before I went out to my lane. But once I switched over to Doran's Shield, my survival rate improved, and I was able to lane longer. And I could do a bit of harassment on my own without getting cut down too much. All thanks to the +8 armor, +200 HP, and additional HP regen every 5 seconds. And try to not do things that will invite heavy harassment from the other team. >_>
Gets boots later. They're cheap and easy to get. Learn to hold your ground. Don't run away like a p'ussy (no offence). You will lose out on so much if you have to go back so many times.

I hate to be an ass here, but lern2beaware of your surroundings. Even if your own teammates are not calling out MIAs, you also have the responsibility of knowing when its not OK to extend your neck too far. There's no excuses here.
