I don't think State and Religion should be together at all, that is the most "Blasphemous union" i've ever seen, not gay marriage.
I understand that it is how it used to be, EVERYBODY was religious hundreds of years ago and religion was more of an important factor in their laws and everyday lives, but nowadays not everyone is religious (or as religious as they used to be) and the fact that the religion and beliefs of certain people affect the entire state is just plain wrong. The western world is a lot more multicultural now, and they have to take every different lifestyle, culture or religion seriously.
For example, a gay man (or woman of course) wants to be married, they aren't religious whatsoever and have never been, they don't believe in god or any faith - yet they cant get married because the "rights" of a religion are more important than their human rights.
Religion shouldn't have a part in any politics any more, or at least ones which limit other people or their individual rights. I don't know much about American politics, so correct me if i'm completely wrong >_>
