What are your opinions on Gay Marriage?

So in all the legality of Gay Marriage isn't a legal issue, but a religious one? I mean if Legal Civil Unions are allowed for both sides by the government and are protected by law, isn't the whole argument of forcing society to change pointless? Shouldn't Gay Rights Activists be appealing to religious factions, leaders, and members for acceptance rather than a government that can not do anything more really?
