The problem with the whole thing is as was stated earlier... any two people can form a Legal Civil Union. the issue is the term Marriage which is not a social problem but a religious one. The whole focus of the battle is against society to say marriage and civil unions are the same thing, which by definition they are similar, but they are not the same.
Atheism is nothing but the thought that there is not enough proof of a/any god/s and that in itself can be modified from person to person, it says nothing or morals, or anything outside of not accepting the claim of a/any god's existence. You're morals come from your upbringing, if they didn't then everyone of the same religious background would have the same morels, which they don't . If you're taught that stoning a disobedient child is the right thing to do, you're not going to look at it as wrong. If that is not the norm for you then you'll probably see it as wrong. Unless you are told something is wrong or come to the conclusion based on experience you'll more likely then not, won't recognize the problem.
As for the topic:
I don't think anything should be forced on the churches... however it's an issue of discrimination... To deny gays to get married is no real difference then discriminating a interracial couple...
It seems to stem from whether or not you can allow the church to discriminate.
