FF13 merely spins off on the same fail design. It repairs the insta fail battle system of 12, but then goes on by ruining it all with abnormal linearity. Bleh xP
The battle system of 12 was incredible. It was meant to optimize exploration and minimize pointless button mashing and did so beautifully. It's not as if you could go through the entire game without ever actually participating in battle because entering any new area with powerful enemies would require you to make critical decisions, it just eliminated the need to waste effort on weak ones, which in turn made exploring the vast world very exciting and doable, rather than STEP STEP UGH BATTLE.
And while I agree that what Nomura did to some of the characters was deplorable (making Vaan the main character instead of Basch, specifically (this was Matsuno's intention until he left the project)) the rest of the cast was enjoyable. Penelo being the other useless exception. Perhaps you would've enjoyed another ridiculous love story but I frankly tire of them. FFXII had a good political story and that was far more fulfilling than any DOING IT FOR LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP story that the rest of the series to date has featured.
