Welcome to AcornStory, our ongoing feature where we help you get started in Maple World – everything from choosing a class to finding friends to understanding combat to tips for account security. MapleStory is easy to learn, but once you learn the basic game mechanics, where do you go and what do you do? That’s where AcornStory can help.

Playing a Mechanic

The Big Bang has come! The evil Black Mage has returned and in a single moment all of MapleWorld has changed. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the Big Bang brings with it exciting new ways to play the game including three new "Resistance" classes. In this edition of MapleStory, we’ll be focusing in on “The Mechanic,” an exciting class that gives you the chance to ride a powerful ‘Mech’ into battle against the forces of evil!

Resistance Classes

"Resistance" classes comprise three groups of people from the town of Edelstein who have formed an underground resistance movement against the Black Wings, the evil minions of the Black Mage who have taken over the town. Resistance classes include the brave Wild Hunters who use crossbows, arrows and a powerful riding jaguar in combat, the noble Battle Mages who use their magic to protect their friends and smash their foes. Finally, the valiant Mechanics are ordinary citizens of Edelstein who ride powerful prototype robots loaded with experimental weaponry.

Building the Machine

The Mechanic, like the other Resistance classes, begins their adventures as a “Citizen” of the town of Edelstein. Once you create your character, you will appear in a quarry on the outskirts of town, playing a game of hide-and-seek with your friends. Once you complete this first quest, you will stumble across the sinister secret that lies beneath the seemingly tranquil town. At the end of this first adventure, you will then have the opportunity to explore the town of Edelstein and complete quests for some of its other residents. This will give you the opportunity to discover the oppression of the town, meet some people who will be very important later on, and get your feet wet in combat.

Once you reach level 10, you’ll speak with Headmaster Ferdi who will send you to the headquarters of the Resistance. In Resistance HQ, speak with Checky, the Mechanic Instructor. He will usher you into the Resistance and teach you the “Mech: Prototype” skill. This is the skill that allows you to summon the riding ‘Mech’ that provides your weapons and new combat abilities.

The Mechanic and Skill/Ability Points

Characters in MapleStory grow stronger in two basic ways. As a character kills monsters, they acquire "experience points." When they attain a certain number of experience points, they'll rise in level. For each level they attain, they'll receive a certain number of Skill Points and Ability Points that they can use to acquire new skills and powers that can be used to fight monsters as well as improve their basic abilities. (Click here to learn more about Skill and Ability Points)

Skill Points -- Mechanic

Skill Points are used to learn new abilities that help Mechanics kill monsters or to increase the power of an already learned skill. Many MapleStory players on the Internet have taken it upon themselves to write detailed guides that recommend various character "builds." This simply means that they give lists of skills they believe make for a skilled and useful player and tell you how many Skill Points you should put into each ability.

If you would like to get some recommended builds or discuss it with other players, you can get started on the official MapleStory Forums.

The guide below won't recommend a specific build, but will point out a few sample Wild Hunter skills.

Note: Certain skills will not be available until you reach a certain level.

Citizen Skills

Citizen skills are skills that are common to any Resistance character. You will acquire these skills at level one and they remain usable regardless of whether you choose to play as a Wild Hunter, Battle Mage, or Mechanic.

[Image: 00AQl-a12178a1-1f2f-4b46-99f9-dbd00017a6f1.PNG] Crystal Throw: Your lifetime growing up around the Rue mines of Edelstein have given you the ability to throw Rue crystals with great force and accuracy.

[Image: 00AQl-6d528ef6-0db2-4c43-abba-59fd9fa2896c.PNG] Infiltrate: You live your life under the watchful eyes of the Black Wings. You have learned to conceal yourself while moving fast for a few seconds. .

[Image: 00AQl-db5d7ebc-4a3f-449e-9aa2-282731d55578.PNG] Potion Mastery: Chronic supply shortages have taught you to make the most of what you have. The effect of all potions is increased.

Ability Points -- Mechanic

Ability Points are used to increase a character's basic abilities. Abilities are inherent characteristics that affect a character's abilities to perform Skills and other actions. "Strength," for example (abbreviated STR) affects the amount of damage a character inflicts when striking a monster. The most important abilities for a particular class are sometimes referred to as their "primary attributes."

Primary Attributes -- Mechanic

Dexterity (DEX): Dexterity is a measure of how nimble and agile your character is. A high DEX increases your accuracy and greatly increases the damage done by ranged weapons. As a Mechanic, this will raise the damage of your attacks as well as assist you in landing metallic blows with your Mech’s fists and hitting opponents with bullets. Most of your Ability Points should go into DEX, and STR will be your secondary attribute.

Strength (STR): Strength measures how physically strong your character is. The higher your Strength, the more damage you'll do when hitting a monster at close range. Mechanics need some STR to wear their equipment.

Pro Tip: While there is an "auto-assign" function that will allocate your points automatically, the distribution of Ability Points is very important for a Mechanic. There may be many opinions on the proper way to distribute Ability Points. It's recommended you seek out the advice of fellow players when building your Mechanic.

Pro Tip:
If you make a mistake allocating your Ability Points, you can reallocate them by purchasing an AP Reset Coupon in the Cash Shop.

Job Advancement

Once your Resistance character reaches level 10, they’ll have the opportunity to begin to specialize in their chosen class. This is called a "job advancement." Unlike Explorers, however, Mechanic job advancements do not come with a change of name, nor do you have a branching advancement path.

In order to get your job advancement, return to Ferdi at level 30. He will instruct you to speak to Checky, who will give you a quest to prove your worth.

When your character reaches level 70, you should speak to Ferdi again, who will instruct you to speak to Checky, who will give you a quest for your next job advancement. Your final job advancement is available at level 120.

Sample Mechanic Skills

Mechanics are close range fighters that like to get in their enemies faces and pound them with merciless metal fists. When that fails, they also have an array of powerful homemade weapons to call on as backup. As Mechanics level up, their job advancement and growing skills focus on turning their Mech into an ever-growing metallic monstrosity able to take on all comers. They will also develop an array of subsidiary robotic soldiers they can summon to the battlefield that include medical droids that can heal them in combat, mini-recon drones to fight alongside, and even a mini-robot factory that pours out legions of self-destructing robots to annihilate enemies.
