I was watching a video on Youtube on how to farm Obsidian, forgot which one it was, you'd have to look it up, but the method I'm using is basically the same, but with a "door" to lcok the water in the room (and for easy room access). At the very bottom of my mine, I've mined so much that I actually know where all of the lava sources are. I even have signs indicating which tunnel leads to which lava point, there's so much lava below my mine that I'm almost certain that I won't run out for a very long time.
In regards to water, I used the "infinite water" trick right in my own base, so I have about "4" blocks used for water, and water will always keep re-generating. I have about 18 buckets. I would often use a HopStop pad to teleport down to the very bottom of my mine, use my buckets, and just get as much lava as I can, bring it up to the surface (tele'ing via HopStop), and then back to my base.
There, per bucket = per slot. So each bucket would fill up a "block" worth of lava. I then would get one empty bucket, fill it with water, go to the "top" of the generator room, and then pour water downwards from a certain anger (corner), and then the water would slam down and hit the lava, thus creating Obsidian 100% of the time. I will never ever get Cobblestones because each of the gaps there are filled with lava correctly, and there's not enough air for it to turn into.. Cobblestone. /logic
Good thing about water is that it's re-usable. So I would refill up the water that I just used with my bucket, and then pour it at the other corner. Then I now have about 8 blocks of Obsidian.
Rinse&Repeat method.

I don't like going to the bottom of mines and just throwing water all over lava. It's stupid, risky, and just risks me losing all of my valuables.
