It really just depends on how lucky you are.
I've found items that are Epic right off the ground.
Usually it takes about 30 cubes for an item to get from Rare to Epic and then another 30 for it to become Unique
When I was cubing my clean 3 line Stirgeman Power Pants for HB it took 92 cubes, iirc, for them to become Unique and then another 6 until they got HB on them
My 3 line VIP Mage Shield on the other hand got to Unique after 15 cubes but didn't give me anything good until another 25 cubes later
