You get used to it when you collect figures. Have to keep up with the times or else you may miss your chance and never get it again unless you want to pay double the retail price on an auction site.

Yeah, sometimes, you only get one chance, it's all a matter of luck, and a lot of demand. Even of auction sites, sometimes, the prices can be ridiculous for older figurines that are no longer in production. I usually go the sales section on AmiAmi and check for what I want, even then, I don't always buy everything I see on there. Sometimes, I check multiple times a day, even if I think they might not update. Like that one time when I managed to get a Nendo BRS for around 1.2k JPY (cheap), considering that the full price was well over 2,000 JPY, last I checked.
