The hyogoku is just a silly macguffin. Hollows have powers that shinigami's cannot access, and vice versa. You can chalk that "two sides of the same coin" to aizen just giving his villanous monologue.
The way i interpreted the final getsuga was that he had gained mastery over his hollow half, but not the sword, so the hollow-half and the sword half conspired to get him the mastery over it.
