Background story
I started school 3-3.5 years ago, and was going after a CHE (chemical engineering) and a Math degree. After 2.5-3 years, I decided to drop the CHE degree because I didn't care for it. My parents were the ones who wanted me to pursue it and I struggled and hated it to death, just wasn't my thing. So I dropped the CHE from my major at spring 2010.
When I wanted to register for Fall 2010, I needed to take 1 more CHE class, because my math degree requires 5 electives, and taking this specific CHE class would work for my degree, so it would save me time since other options would require a minimum of 2 classes.
Problem is, when I tried to register online, the system wouldn't allow me to register for the CHE class because it would be my 5th CHE course, and the system said "Non-CHE majors can only register for a max of 4 CHE course." I went to an adviser about this, and she basically said that restriction is put in place so students wouldn't take an excess of classes in a specific major, and then find out later that they didn't have the required courses for their real major.
I asked her if she could force-add me, and she told me to talk to my CHE adviser. It took forever to get a hold of her, and she basically did nothing for me. The only way I could add it was to reapply for my CHE major, become a CHE and Math major again, and then i could register for the 5th CHE class. While they believed I would continue my degree in CHE, I just used them so I could take the 5th course since they didn't even bother to help me out.
Now I'm at the end of Fall 2010 and I have all my coursework for my math degree, just finished my last final today and officially I am done with my math degree. I talked to my math adviser numerous times and he has told me that all my coursework is acceptable and will qualify me to get my degree in applied mathematics. I even specifically made sure about the electives (I did not explain the whole fiasco of the 5th CHE course) but he said it didn't matter and that all the courses I took work for the math department and there are no problems.
Now I have a problem, but I am not sure if it is a problem. My biggest fear is when I drop the CHE major again, I'm going to get hit with some bureaucratic red tape from my CHE department who won't bother to help me, and just basically tell me my coursework won't count and take it away from me, essentially taking away my math degree. I was planning to not register for the spring semester, wait for my degree to come in the mail, and then officially drop the CHE major. But apparently I have to fill out leave of absence paperwork, and I really am unsure of what to do.
So in summary, I had to re-add my CHE major so I could take a course to count towards my math degree, but I planned to drop it right after. My fear is dropping the CHE major will somehow take away one of my classes, and thus take away my math degree. I can't really talk to any administration because if that is the case, they could possibly take it away. So I'm asking if anyone has an idea of what I should do, or maybe some information on this situation? It will be really stupid if I have to take 1 semester extra for 1 class, and end up paying 3-4 grand for it, just because of this.
