Most monsters higher up use more magic attacks than physical ones anyway. Unless your shield has Magic defense, all this physical defense gets more and more useless over time anyway.
Yeah but the second you get Rush, you'll be practically INSIDE the monsters, meaning the majority of your damage will be Physical regardless.
If you don't see a difference in the damage you're taking with a Shield then without it and you have 20 Shield Mastery...your defense is garbage to begin with. If I still had KMS installed I'd be glad to make a video showing the difference for my Pally with and without a Shield, and I guarantee you that it's substantial.

Aye it does, I can't remember if I mentioned this in one of my previous posts.
The problem is that it doesn't increase it nearly as much as Physical, because Warriors will naturally have lower Magical then Physical. The good side is that you can easily still get this up. I have (with Shield Mastery) nearly 4000 Physical and 1500 Magical Defense on my KMS Pally. It's nearly half the Magical over Physical, but still...that's at least 500 damage negated. Even if every hit you took was Magical, 5,000 damage in 10 hits is a huge amount of HP you've saved.
I will repeat this: Paladins are the only Warrior class to have both Shield Mastery and Guardian still. They are meant to be the Tank class Post-BB. EVEN if you're not paying attention to Defense at all, a 40% chance to negate ANY ATTACK, INCLUDING 1/1s, is a BEYOND great reason to use a Shield. You don't even lose THAT much Attack, and the majority (if not all) of the lost damage is easily replaced by an AS4/5 sword over an AS6 2-h.
