Maybe it's just with higher level mobs, or just majorly effecting Pink Bean or something.

No, however +50 defense with +200% from Shield Mastery is instantly +100 more. With the new scrolls, you can make Paladins even bigger tanks.
Fix up all your armor in 60%s and you'll have such a huge boost nothing will hurt you.
Also, what do you guys mean it gets reduced by a percentage? My Paladin on KMS would take 1-150 Damage from Gigantic Vikings with something like 4.3k Defense. That's way more than 40%, that's nearly about 90%, since they do about 1500 touch to my Bowmaster.

Since (as with lots of things) MS rounds down, from 6400-6723 def, you'll have the same 40% reduction. That's a difference of 323 defense that doesn't matter. Now how many items can give +323 def? None...
