Getting cold makes you fatter?
#1
It's getting to that one time of the year that brings snow to everyone that hates the equator, and my mom gets hysterical because of things like influenza, icy roads, and me getting fatter.

I find the last claim to be bullshyt. She seems to think that just by being cold, your body just stores up fat and you get fatter. (It doesn't help that she cooks for x+2 people every lunch and dinner.)

I think that by being colder, you actually burn fat, because body temperature is related to how much energy you burn. And it seems more obvious when you look into the mechanics of shivering. It's not cold enough to make me do that the majority of the time however.

I'm a shorts and tee guy, and there's not a whole lot you can do to make me wear pants outside of a formal occasion or laboratory setting, and even less of a chance if you're trying to get me to wear long sleeves. I don't mind the cold a whole lot. I've walked to highschool in 20 degree Fahrenheit weather for 15 minutes. I've slept outside in 45 degree weather, waking up to really strong winds in the morning. And I've made repeated nightly treks through college campus (it is large), wind or snow or rain, with nothing but shorts and tee.

Is there a real explanation to my mother's claims? And preferably in biological terms too.
