He pleaded guilty. I believe there was another case of some guy that got banned for having Simpsons porn on his hard drive for the same reason. Also, I think there's something about not using the U.S. Postal service for obscene material or something. It's an article I read long ago and forgot, and since I can't rely on my memory too much, it's possible that's not entirely correct.

Child Pornography laws are set in place for the safety of children. If there's a market for it, it increases the chances of children getting exploited for this market. Therefore, it's not enough to just target those that exploit the children, but there must also be a penalty for those that promote the exploit of these children by viewing them.
But 2D characters have human rights as well, don't they? So I guess it's best to protect their rights.
