I can see how people do not prefer such restrictions, and how freedom seems appealing, but I very much doubt when you say it creates less problems if you just give people the means to do what they want.
Except you still punish people who harm others. No one has a right to steal from another, but they sure have a right to mess up their own body. I personally wouldn't do drugs because I don't want to mess up my body like that, but if others want to then fine.
And, we know it creates more problems by looking at history. When prohibition hit the USA it helped sprout organized crime. These gangsters commited crimes to get alcohol to the people because people were gonna drink regardless of the law. Now that alcohol is legal, these organizations mvoed on to other illegal substances. They continue to commit henious crimes because it is profitable to do so. If you make it more profitable for the substances to be obtained legally then you eliminate a lot of crime. There's a reason we aren't dealing with Mexican alcohol cartels, atm. Sure, drugs are mind altering and possibly create a situation where an individual will hurt another, but overall the problem is much greater when taking drugs is a criminal activity.
