ITT:Post your future child's name

When I said a name should be personal I meant it should be something that you feel when you first see the baby.

Alright, I can respect this idea. You feel that at a moral level, it's wrong because you feel that we shouldn't be so hasty as to predetermine a label that will stick with them for life without actually seeing them. In that, you see it as impersonal and that the names should reflect the child in some way and how you feel about them, correct?

In my opinion, that's very hard to tell right at birth. A child is essentially a clean slate, in terms of personality at that moment of birth; and their physical features aren't that defined yet, so you usually can't quite tell what aspect of them stands out the most to you. I can see it that you might notice something like the child's eyes or dimples as standing out to you, and then pick a name that you associate most with those features- like perhaps someone you knew; and in that it's personal. However, the thought of the name might just not come to you that easily, like Spidey states.

The one thing you as a parent do know the most about the child, though, is that you love them unconditionally and want to care for them dearly. You know this even before the moment the child is born and you first see the baby. And you know, that's all that really matters, that you hold this/these child/children (in case of twins or something) preciously. That's all the thought in the world you need to name a child.

But giving it an anime name or a stupid name like CLOUD pretty much dooms it to be harassed for the first 13 years of it's life and can take a serious toll on it's self-esteem. It shouldn't be about what you think is cool, it should be about what's best for the child. If you like the name Cloud then go change your name, don't put a kid through that.

Alright, cool, no problems here. I concur with you here. I think it's wrong to put something that becomes a social stigma upon the child for something it didn't want or ask for in the first place. It should only be of in the child's volition if it wants to have something considered to be a social stigma placed upon it, but at birth, you'll just have to let them grow up naturally and with everyone else. I do agree with your views on bullying, and am going to disagree with Spidey on the below statement:

Also, you really like bringing up bullying. You realize bullies will find literally anything to pick on if they really want to pick on you, right? Even stuff that's fairly normal can be a source of bullying. They don't care so much what they use for bullying as much as they care about the target they're bullying. In most cases, anyway. I guess I can't speak for you, since you're a self proclaimed Bad Girl that picked on others when you were a kid.

You're understating the psychological importance of names. While you acknowledge it has impact, you say its equal to any other bullying, like bullying little Apu because he's the short Indian kid who smells funny. They aren't the same. It's a very difficult topic to really explain, but essentially, it really challenges a very big part of their identity. At this point, they can't heal the mental wounds inflicted by this even if they changed their name, as it has already made an impressionable emotional impact on them and changing their name wouldn't remove their memory of the fact that this name wasn't their original name. I do agree with Sarah on this.

Also Isaac and I were talking about this just a couple weeks ago and some really bad(ass) real names include Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii and Number 16 Bus Shelter.

But these names are some really different examples, in terms of how they affect child development.

Children with names like Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii and Number 16 Bus Shelter tend to develop whimsical, individualistic, and exhibitionistic personalities; because they can't even take themselves seriously when they understand the significance of their names, therefore tend to become jokers and lack seriousness in conversing with others.

At least in Spidey's examples of "Konata" and "Sakura", they're real names and children with names like that they will be able to accept it and could likely grow up like any other child.

Bullying isn't accounted for in here because I'm not sure how to possibly consider if they would be bullied or not based on their name.

No it doesn't. Like I said, the names he picked are normal. They're rare names that you don't see much nowadays, but they're still normal names. One of the series he picked also has a character named "Maria" in it. If he really liked that name and used it, would it matter that he got it from an anime?

I really appreciate your effort to stand up for me, but at this point, it's no longer really about me. At least, I don't think so. Also, a certain series had nothing to do with the Beatrice.
