I think that's a bit off. Modern girls mostly have a bit more of a realistic expectation now. That is to say, they KNOW that chasing after hot guys is dumb -- and its usually because half the time, they're not worth the effort. We know that the hot guy is used to being under the attention of many girls. He's most likely got an ego big enough that you end up becoming some random hot chick that he drags around to show off as his prize rather than his girlfriend. Guess what happens when a hotter chick drops on by? To him, we're just a new trend. Once we get old, it gets boring and we're tossed away like a shoe. This applies girls as much as it does guys. Some girls just dump as they go when they find prettier prizes.
The average joe on the other hand, hasn't been showered with that much attention to inflate his ego to that point. And since he isn't used to being paid so much attention from a girl, he'll most likely treasure her and be willing to pay more attention to a girl's needs.
tl;dr: You have to have lost before you understand its value. You don't know value if it's always handed to you on buncha silver platter, served, and ready to go.
