Firstly you only take the smaller, 2.5kish damage if you stay away from it (NLs, bowmen and corsairs). The boss lightning only hits below where he is so if you can toss him upwards (or wait for him to jump onto a platform on his own), you will be safe from lightning attack. He can be taken all the way to the top where he will no longer do any attack but walk around, but that requires technique. Essentially he becomes Anego if he jumps onto a platform and you constantly KB him.
Bowmen can also solo w/o taking damage by placing a pupper behind you and knocking him away. DB might be able to do the same.

Durability goes down even when you're standing still. However as long as you recover it after a run (like you do with syuris and bullets) you wouldn't have a problem.
