I would say because he feels remorse and is showing that he's human too. Not that anything he would have done is right, and he may have been playing a sympathy card, but still, he just seemed like he was confused from what I saw.
He should face the consequences for what he could have done, but even if he's able to truly change, he's going to be marked by this for the rest of his life.
