TheSmartGuy's Scamming Prevention Guide
#15
A variation of the 'click fast scam'. I was hit by this once.

I used to scroll numerous items. I usually scrolled three of the same items as a safety net in case one broke. So I just finished a 15 LUK 1 INT esther shield, and had a 13 LUK 0 slot and 11 LUK 1 slot. I no longer needed the 13 LUK and 11 LUK, so I was in FM spamming "S> 13 and 11 LUK ESTHER@@@"...

All of a sudden, someone trades me, puts in 400m, and then decides to pull the click fast scam. Of course, having seen this scam before (back then, I mass hunted for ilbis and had to deal with this), I thought I could beat the trick. I clicked fast the second time, and actually beat the speed of the scammer. Expecting 400m when the blue message pops up, instead, it says "Trade Unsuccessful". The scammer traded me again. I thought I could beat her again, so I clicked fast, she put in 400K, and the trade was successful.

(Off Topic: I later found the two shields in the shop of someone with a similar IGN. I was pretty pissed but what could I do?)

Tip: NEVER think you can beat a scammer. They have tricks that you can never anticipate, and will always develop new ways to make you lose.

Another scam:

When I was a 4x character, someone in the FM says, "I'm quitting and giving away my items." I'm finding a few people to give my items to. I have two other people. If you come, I can start giving the items away. So I follow them, thinking that I'll be safe if I don't drop anything. They lead me to the Perion FM.

So, the person hosting the dropgame, dressed in noob clothing tells us to wait by the portal, saying "One at a time." He says, "OK, who wants to be first?" The sin standing next to me jumps up and down and spams me. Seeing that, the archer standing next to him started spamming the same too. So the host says, "Sin, you're first." The sin climbs up the ladder.

The host explains, "the way this works is that you everything you're wearing, and then pick it up. I'll then drop my best item and you can loot it."

The sin drops his clothing. The mage drops a maple staff. The Archer sees this and jumps up the ladder and tries to loot, but the sin gets the maple staff first. The sin smiles. "Again! Again!" he calls out. The host says, "We'll take turns. It's the Archer's turn."

The archer drops all equips. The host drops his cromi. The archer then loots both.

"Mage (referring to me), it's your turn." Now thinking that this was real, I climbed up, and dropped the items. Then, I spammed Z. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the host teleports and gets a few of my items. You can imagine my anger when I realized this, because he was dressed in nub clothing, and I didn't realize he was actually a mage.

The host quickly CCed, as well as the sin. The archer logged off. Tongue
I tried following them, and eventually, I gave up. An hour later, I tracked them again and saw the host and the sin trying to scam another guy.

No matter how real it seems, just be smart and don't get tricked.
