I think you should try all versions to see the subtle ~~messups~~ differences in the game esp. with NPC lines. NPCs sometimes have completely different personalities making it quite...amusing...
1st gen and 1st gen remade for the DS also has different graphics. Sometimes their entire image changes from version to version (FF esp.)
