I was in (pretty sure it was this one) years and years ago but with CDs. Basically you sign up for a low amount and get a bunch of CDs that you then pay a high amount for for shipping and handling per CD. Like 12 CDs for a penny, then 4 bucks per to ship them.
After that you have to buy 5 CDs at the regular price within a year in order to fulfill your obligation. Regularly priced were like 18-24 dollars each but were typically bundled in a buy one at regular price get one free type of deal, of course with the shipping and handling added onto each.
It wasn't a horrible deal at the time, if you waited for the right monthly special to pop up.
Nowadays though buying media is borderline throwing money away compared to the online options that are available.
So yeah, 1 dollar to sign up is their special to draw you in to a yearly commitment of x amount of dvds assuming they still work off the same principle.
