If your computer is relatively new, your hard drive will likely be in AHCI mode. XP doesn't support this and will crash when you try to use it. It should be in your BIOS somewhere under some setting along the lines of HDD Mode. Change it from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility.

I'm not exactly sure what my BIOS is. How do i check? I just bought my laptop a few days ago. It's a Sony Vaio EB
