charging does make you do more damage than not charging. try just tapping it and you'll see the difference.
For surviving I try to kill the monsters with FC so I have time to pot. you're invincible during the skill, but no invincibility frames immediately after, so if you land on a monster you get hit.
at zak you can go into zak's body with dark sight and final cut out. haven't been to ht or cwk on my DB, but I supose the same can be done on cwk, though there's no need for dark sight since they hit little.
