About the Maple Times thing, they probably did it because he's a forum volunteer and a good member of their forums who gave a lot of contribution.
He has over 8k posts there, and well, seeing how much he contributed to their forums, he deserves it. It's not like he's a "random guy", at least not in the Nexon Forums.
