The purple potential scrolls makes any item unidentified if it isn't. (might need slots on it, haven't heard of people identifying lilin's rings) This includes existing equipment and stuff you get from NPCs.

The only thing you need item drops for is to skip buying the purple scrolls, cause item drops have about a 10% chance of being "unidentified".


Easy proof: Reverse items are only maker-able, and maker never makes "unidentified" items. Every rare/epic/unique Reverse item was potential scrolled.
