I think it makes more sense to maintain the idea that the time machine wouldn't travel through the 3rd dimension... I always hate when in fiction, characters live in America, travel through time, and end up in medieval Europe. Freaking annoying.
A little off topic but I just wanted to extend the idea of moving in the 3ed dimension. There always has to be some movement because if there wasn't you would end up in the same spot as you started, just in a different time. And to use the earth as an example, you would probably be in space, since the earth would be in a different position than where you started, depending on what time of history you choose to visit.
For example, if you stared in America in the spring and wanted to visit America six months earlier, the earth have moved underneath you to a position halfway around its orbit. If you didn't move along with it, you would occupy the same space you did in spring, leaving you alone, with no planet.
Although I don't really know what kind of rotation the maple world is meant to have.
These are the kinds of thoughts that keep me from doing anything useful.
edit: although I don't disagree, it is rather annoying that that kind of thing is never taken into consideration, and its just meant to part of your suspension of disbelief.
