I spoke with an HP Technical Assistant and he said it was probably a compatibility problem between Vista and my monitor.
I appreciate your help...but I've tried everything. My only hope is to either just ditch Vista or dual boot like I was planning...however complex it is.
1440x900 is the perfect resolution for 19" monitors. Just get used to it.
Me and a friend use 19" monitors, and everything else looks like crap.
