-sigh- Your monitor is too small for you and you're blaming it on Vista? It has nothing to do with Vista. I hate how the general impression of Vista being a bad OS has people blaming completely random problems on Vista.
Vista icons are supposed to be a lot larger than XP icons to accommodate larger screen resolutions. What's the size of your monitor? If it's not 17 wide, 1440x900 may be too big.
I'd suggest trying the following at least:
Go into Control Panel and search "dpi" (I don't really love Vista all that much either, but that's definitely something XP didn't have)
Click the indicated option and you'll come to this prompt.
Choose to increase the dpi setting. You're done
