Excellent comments Swerve, and I completely agree. Do I think that Glee is good television, if good television is defined as containing a riveting, original plot? Hell no. But that doesn't mean the series can't exist, and be enjoyed, for its entertainment value. Plus, the whole aspect of a major national television show performing covers of not only popular songs in contemporary culture but musical songs as well as brand new. That's one of the reasons I enjoy it, along with many of my thespian friends: for the first time in nearly half a century, the musical is making a comeback in pop culture, thanks to the hype it gets on the show. You can't say it's a bad thing that an enormous amount of people who discovered Defying Gravity and Idina Menzel for the first time from this show, if such people become interested in that genre of music, considering musicals, regardless of what you may think of them, contain actual music. My point is, there are some good points to the show that are original.

May I ask as well what you'd like to see with character progression? It sounds to me like you believe the show is too predictable, which honestly, I agree with. But then again so are a lot of popular television shows, once you've watched enough episodes (ex. Law and Order SVU. Each episode tells a fantastic story with great acting, etc., but they all follow the same basic plot flow). Does that make bad television? Those who decide what's good TV by doling out Emmys don't seem to think so, as L&O SVU is coming back for a 12th season next year, with multiple Emmy wins in its time on the air. So then, what do you want in character progression? When you list what you find wrong with the show ("But at the end of the day..."), all you're really doing is listing who people are. I agree some people could change a bit more (like Santana and Brittany), but a lot of characters DID do a lot of growing this season, especially during the second half, and again, you're listing "gay" as something that should be changed. He's getting a boyfriend next season, so no worries - character development.

Oh, and about that as well: if you're going to list the inadequate rehashings a show does with plot themes, I'd like to see you equally list the innovative and truly original aspects. Let me help get you started: this is the first time on national television a gay teen has been open in a high school setting, with potential on-screen romance next season also adding a layer of unprecedented mold-breaking to the list.

hey froz could you do me a favour and stop name-dropping whenever someone disses glee? i am embarrassed that i watch it and everyone else should be too for the reasons swerve mentioned and as sue sylvester once said, "so you like showtunes? that doesn't mean you're gay; it just means you're awful."

I'll stop with "haters" or other specifics, but there are well-done aspects with the show. Some include why you like it. Plus, I'm not going to stop liking something I do and talking about it because a bunch of people think it's lame and judge me for it. Unlike some people, I don't care what others think about me and do things I like to do without getting embarrassed by them. It's not like Glee is my life, and if you all knew me closer in real life you'd know that. Glee is just another television show; it's not our lives, and only when something takes an inordinate focus in one's life (ex. MapleStory) does it become a real problem.

If you truly think it sucks and are ashamed to be watching it, then don't watch it. But don't watch the show and then whine to me about your inability to secure a little self-confidence in the things you like to do in life.

I watch Glee but only for the musicals being the musicophile I am. But for the show, it takes on too much when they added a drama sugarcoat to something that's as original as a television musical. Personally comedy/sitcom would be a better flavor to Glee since it would compliment the light and cheery musical atmosphere. But juggling between drama and sunshine rainbow lollipops is a bad idea; I'm not sure how a teen in a wheelchair singing (and dancing) to an upbeat pop song is suppose to be expressing his lack of confidence due to his condition. I'd turn to Degrassi if I wanted melodramatic teens, coming of age and struggles with identity.

Again, another excellent point, and I agree that a (mostly) lighthearted show should be taken from the same perspective regarding overarching plot moods. That being said, is every musical number in the show a "sunshine rainbow lollipop" arrangment? Is every moment in which a song is sung a "sunshine rainbow lollipop moment?" To clarify your confusion about Artie's daydream dance, he's optimistically looking forward to the day when he can walk again, thanks for novel medical procedures and drugs (he essentially gains confidence through the daydream, as his line to Tina when she snaps him back into reality before the commercial break is "I'm going to dance one day," said with a smile). If you think that's too "sunshine rainbow lollipopy," may I ask what's wrong with being optimistic in life, even to a delusional aspect at times towards certain extremes (such as major medical conditions)? I invite you to visit a local cancer ward and speak with the most optimistic patients. I'm sure some of them would sound like him.

Not true. I hate Twi-hards. But if you can formulate your own opinions after reading/viewing a particular media, and are fully able and confident to express such views, I hold a greater level of respect for you. Ex: Though I disagree with some points, Swerve's post bolstered my respect for him. He's bothered to watch the show and can provide a well-constructed argument to strengthen his opinion.
