I find that quote oh so very true. Though it seems to be a quote about love, it can be a quote on life in general. To some extent, I could say its a quote I live by.
As a Christian, I believe that God has a purpose for everything in my life and I'll let him work things out. Sure I can go out and try my hardest, even compromise my conscience to get something I really want, but what's the point? If I had to ruin myself to get something, then it probably wasnt meant to be.
The statement is a paradox, like "those who want to live will lose it and those who give their lives for others will gain it" or "it is those who dont care about the fame who end up being famous in the long run".
Going back to my beliefs, I can do everything I can beyond the boundaries of my conscience to try achieving something and it still might not work yet I can do nothing and still get to the same end point. You could indeed fight and do everything to win her love, but at the same time, the decision lies with her, not you. No matter what you do, she still decides whether or not to love you. You could do everything and the girl still might not love you yet some other guy might not have to do anything and she will love him anyways. In my translation, what you're letting go isnt your love for your girlfriend but rather your girlfriend's right to make a decision whether or not to love you.
