The purple scrolls can be used on any normal equip at any time. Once you've used it, it gets an "Unidentified" subtitle.
The yellow scrolls can only be used on equips with no slots. They are kinda like chaos scrolls (random additions to stats on the item, except in this case they only add stats, and can add things that weren't on the item - str/luk/dex/int all seem possible). After each success a star is added and the rate of success decreases.
The Magnifying Glass can be used on "Unidentified" equips. Once you've used it, it becomes Rare/Epic/Unique, and gains stats "below the line". These can be % stats, +stats, avoid/acc, hp/mp, etc. This is what gives the blue/purple/yellow item outlines. It adds these stats randomly and in random amounts.
The Magic Box can be used on "Rare/Epic/Unique" equips. Once you've used it, it goes back to "Unidentified" subtitle and loses the stats below the line.
