So the sequence of possibilities is like
1) regular equip
2) potential scroll / advanced potential scroll to make it "unidentified" (70%/90% success - do these break if they fail?)
3) magnifying glass to identify stats
4) magic cube to go back to step 2?
And some items can drop already "unidentified".
As long as you only need 1 potential scroll per equip it's not too bad. You'd be using more cubes/magnifying glasses anyway, if you're shooting for the kind of +9% +9% +9% possibilities.
