Oh jesus, lots of people responded to me. I don't have the time to respond to everyone, so I'll just make one mashed up response to what I think you said.
Yes, I do like "What should I watch now???" threads, especially if the OPs have lists on ANN, MAL, or Anime-Planet. I've watched something like 200 anime, enough for me to give out recs based on what people like, not just the usual few. Threads like this fail because the difference in opinion leads to people watching shows they might not like (especially when one vote gets an anime put up on the list). I see quite a few anime that are generally regarded as "bad" on the list and would never make a "What should I watch now???" thread.
"Top Anime" rankings on ANN, MAL, etc. also fail because there are so many people who watch three or four anime, make a list that gives them 10/10 and Naruto 1/10, and then never watch anything else.
/a/'s list works because it's in between the "everything works" recommendation thread and the mass popularity contest of MAL. A bunch of people who have watched enough anime to judge anime fairly collaborate to make the chart. In other words, it's like MAL for the elitist bastards. You weed out the people who don't know enough about anime, yet you don't have everybody throwing recommendations either.
Beck is a sports anime minus the sports. It's about music, but everything else is the same.
I put Strike Witches under "underrated" not because I don't hear people talk about it (despite what I wrote), but because I always hear people making their stupid false assumptions that it's fully fanservicecrap. Of course there's fanservice (loads of it), but it's way better than any of those ecchi comedies out there. Imagine a Sora no Woto with fanservice, and you're somewhere near Strike Witches.
In other news, why hasn't anybody recommended One Piece? Having only watched 30 episodes of the anime (yet up to date with the manga), I'm in no position to say this, but it's a really great series. I don't see how people can just "forget" it and suggest obscure shows like Dragon Half and Ai to Yuuki no Pig Girl Tonde Buurin (which nobody can really go against because nobody else has ever seen it)...
Of course, I'm an offender of that too (my "underrated" anime weren't put up, though). Obscurity doesn't equal "
I'm against...
Angel Beats: It's just not good enough. People praise it for jumping from scene to scene, but I call that "bad plot." It's rushed and disjointed, and nothing short of a spectacular ending can save it.
To Aru Kagaku no Railgun: Personally, I would rarely recommend this. The show is only enjoyable if you've watched Index and liked Mikoto and Kuroko. If not, then this show is a waste of time.
Bakemonogatari: I didn't like Senjougahara, and that completely ruined this whole show for me.
Ouran High School Host Club: I thought it sexist.
Serial Experiments Lain: I liked it, but it's clearly not for everybody. Heck, it's not for 99% of anime fans...
P.S.: Lucky Star doesn't have the "s" at the end. Also, did people send PMs against Lucky Star or something? I don't see the three votes against it in this thread.
