This is the prologue to the story I'm currently sorta in the process of writing. It has almost nothing to do with the plot itself; it just explains events leading up to the start of the story. Posting it here to confirm practicality.

In the year 2097, a stray asteroid made high speed, full-on contact with the moon, destroying about 30% of its total mass and sending pieces of lunar debris hurling in all directions, some of them still orbiting the Earth to this day. One of these large pieces of debris glanced off upon impact and sent the U.S. federal intelligence satellite, KH-13, spiraling out of Earth's orbit and lost in space forever.
Distraught, the United States government along with NASA immediately began construction of a second satellite with similar capabilities as the first. In the years past, the United States had not faltered as a global superpower and had annexed the Midway Islands and Wake Island as officially recognized states in the United States. With possession of lands so close to the other end of the Pacific Rim and a new secret intelligence satellite in construction, states such as the China, North Korea, and Laos immediately grew paranoid of the United States' expanding power and, at a United Nations meeting in 2100, these three communist nations, under threat of nuclear warfare, spoke out against the launching of this satellite with claims of "Concern for the safety, privacy, and independence of the world's peoples, their governments, and their economies".
The United States dismissed all claims of international spying or gathering of unauthorized intelligence using KH-13 and stated that no such things would happen with this new satellite and, in retaliation, criticized the "apparent communist desire of superpower status", denouncing the Asian threat of nuclear warfare as a misdemeanor. Following 2100 was a period of heightened tension between the United States and China, North Korea, and Laos.
In 2112, civil war broke out in Russia, which also involved Balkan states; belligerents included the Russian Federation, the Leninist Russian Red Republic (RRR) and the temporarily formed Neo-Republic of Yugoslavia, created by the unification of socialist states in the Balkans. By the decade's end in 2120, the allied RRR and Neo-Republic of Yugoslavia had gained ground in Russia and successfully gained control of the arctic northern sector of Russia, including St. Petersburg as well as the historic city of Kiev in Ukraine. Slowly losing ground, however, against the Russian Federation as well as the United States, Great Britain, and France, who had allied themselves with the Russian Federation, the RRR and Neo-Yugoslavia sought alliance with the People's Republic of China to assist in the new Red Army's unsuccessful southern campaign, which had been pushed further and further north.
With the participation of the USA in this Russian war, both China and North Korea gave their support to the Red Army in order to push the United States into the threat of nuclear war. The Slav-Oriental alliance quickly recovered, pushing back from the slim margin of territory that they possessed and, by 2123, the federal capital of Moscow had been put under siege.
Wanting to avoid nuclear warfare with China or the Red Army at all costs, the United States offered a proposition to the Slav-Oriental alliance, a proposition which the Russian Federation and their European allies accepted with hesitance. The Treaty of Moscow, signed in 2124, granted global recognition of the RRR and Yugoslavia, which had been annexed into the RRR, as official countries. In exchange for a pact of no nuclear warfare, the RRR was granted possession of all territory north and east of Moscow. Communism had returned to Russia.
The Russian Federation had moved their capital down into Novgorod, a city only miles south of the new RRR capital of Moscow. Aware of its faults in the Slavic War, as it was dubbed, the United States immediately began to formulate an underhanded plan to suppress the RRR. In 2129, the RRR began to campaign in Kazakhstan, immediately bordering the Russian Federation at its southern end. The Russian Federation sent troops to combat this colonization, as did Ukraine, which was not kept under RRR control. In 2130, the RRR extended its efforts to Poland to the west, and in 2132, to Mongolia, with the assistance of China. The United States remained silent as this new communist nation slowly ate, literally, at the doorstep of its rival.
The United States' successor satellite to KH-13, GA-002, put into orbit in 2128, was able to gather information on an attack on the states of Wake Island, the Midway Islands, and Alaska, being organized by the RRR. Immediately, days after this revalation in 2133, United States troops were shipped into northern Russia, and, once again, assisted the Russian Federation in suppressing the RRR. The People's Republic of China and North Korea immediately questioned this United States action and, repeating their words from 30 years ago, condemned the United States intelligence satellite and demanded discontinuation of its now evident operation, under threat of nuclear war. The United States, backed into a corner, flatly refused, claiming that the actions that they had taken were completely justifiable and that action had to be taken in order to protect themselves and other nations within the RRR's reach.
With the RRR on their side, the People's Republic of China prepared launch of a nuclear missile, Dayue, aimed at the United States capital of Washington, D.C.
Immediately, the United States declared war on China. The RRR, in retaliation, declared war on the USA; the Russian Federation declared war on the RRR, Great Britain on the RRR, and Japan on China. What resulted was what would be known as the shortest-lived modern war in history, the Pacific Rim War.
In 2133, Dayue was launched at Washington, D.C, where 400,000 casualties were suffered. The United States, in retaliation, launched Arctic I and Arctic II at St. Petersburg and Moscow, decimating the populations of those cities as well. After deploying into the borders of the RRR with huge public support from their countrymen, the United States, Great Britain, Japan, and the Russian Federation combatted Chinese and Red Army troops not only in RRR territory, but also in China and within the borders of the Russian Federation. The United Nations condemned the war in 2134 due to excessive use of nuclear weaponry and, alarmingly, for the sake of the future of humanity itself.

In 2134, a total of seven nuclear weapons had been used against the Sino-Russian alliance, while the Russian Federation and the United States had their territories ravaged by five. on New Year's Day, 2135, Great Britain and France dropped four atomic bombs throughout Russia and three on China, on Beijing, Guangzhou, and Luoyang. Throughout 2134, Russia and China had been completely transformed by the excessive use of nuclear weapons into, literally, radioactive wastelands. Two nuclear missiles, Crimea III and IV, launched into Paris and Brussels, ended the war in late 2134 on an agreed armistice.

Bombing of the coasts of the United States and Russia had heavily polluted the Pacific and Atlantic with radioactive waste, and all land was completely barren. The RRR was disbanded due to having Russia completely destroyed, while the Russian Federation moved south into Kazakhstan and left into Ukraine, with Kiev as its capital. The RRR had been disposed of, but at an extremely heavy cost.
Due to radioactive pollution during the war, the polar ice caps immediately began to melt, first flooding the Arctic Oceans and then the Pacific. For the next two years, the entire world would experience major flooding, which ate away at the already devastated and war-torn populations of the belligerent nations in the Pacific Rim War.
In 2135, the global fishing industry had been condemned. Island nations went barren and unpopulated due to a lack of an adequate food or water source. Soon, entire populations of all the people in the world were forced inland, due to the coastal regions of all of the continents being uninhabitable. The United Nations broke into a fit and, by 2136, had condemned the United States, China, and the former RRR, demanding reparations for damages that were unrepairable. Radiation began to decimate global climates everywhere only days after the 2136 UN meeting and entire populations, beginning in North America and the Pacific Rim, began to die off due to exposure. By 2140, global population had been reduced to 300 million and, five years later, 100 million. In 2155, all record of pre-existing human influence had been abandoned, the officially recorded population being reduced to under one million.
It is not known exactly when the first survivors became prominent and repopulate the Earth, but it's assumed to be close to 2000 years ago. What exists now is a repeat of human history, of the classical era, coexisting with the then-future of human technology, still a mystery to the simpler people of the new age.
