His reply to your question is rather questionable, I got to admit. I don't get what he says, simply put. However, it seems like he was thinking that poisoning the mobs weren't possible, and that this is something he had to see what's going to happen with:
"About the mobs, we'll have to see how it works out. No promises, though."
