Since my favorite Gwyn quit, I haven't given a second thought about Beginners, nice to know someone like Elyssa though. Way to go, girl! 
As for leeching, I leech my mules -hb, hs, se, si- and friends' mules/secondary chars. Any main character should be self-trained in my opinion. Without working, you can't have anything, with appropriate amounts of work, you get extra benefits to help play better.
