But so would TERMINATING someone. First film had a terminator sent back to kill someone, second (and third) film had both a terminator for protection and one trying to kill someone.

Or it could be unrelated. You know, there is a 4th film coming out shortly, this one being post apocalyptic, dealing with the actual war against machines.

EDIT: in fact, the very fact that this robot is not disguised as a human (i.e., seems to be lacking the living skin tissue as a disguise), it is potentially possible that it is related to the post-apocalyptic future. Remember that in the films that the skeletal robot forms of these guys are more associated with their future warrior forms than in their time traveling counterparts.
